State Visit from Canada - the programme in brief

On 20–23 February 2017, Governor General of Canada David Johnston, accompanied by Dr Sharon Johnston, will pay a State Visit to Sweden at the invitation of HM The King.

The Swedish Government will be represented by Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, Minister for EU Affairs and Trade Ann Linde and Minister for Higher Education and Research Helene Hellmark Knutsson.

Global issues, migration, innovation, sustainability and trade will be the focus of the State Visit, alongside the promotion of potential business opportunities between the two countries.

The four-day visit will encompass Stockholm, Malmö, Lund and Gothenburg.

Monday 20 February

12.10 Official welcoming ceremony in the Inner Courtyard

Afternoon:
15.05 Speaker of the Riksdag Urban Ahlin receives Governor General Johnston at the Riksdag
15.30 Dr Sharon Johnston and HM The Queen visit Fryshuset
16.00 Prime Minister Stefan Löfven receives Governor General Johnston at Rosenbad

20.00 Banquet at the Royal Palace

Tuesday 21 February 
Morning:
09.00 Governor General Johnston and HM The King take part in a panel discussion on Swedish-Canadian business opportunities
10.15 Visit to Karolinska Institutet

12.30 Lunch at City Hall

Afternoon:
14.30 Governor General Johnston and HM The King visit the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
14.30 Dr Sharon Johnston and HM The Queen visit the Aging Research Centre (ARC)

Evening:
19.30 Reception, ‘Friends of Canada’

Wednesday 22 February – Malmö and Lund
Morning:
10.30 Visit to Malmö University for panel discussion on diversity and integration in cities, and programme on home-based support to vulnerable families with small children

Afternoon:
14.00 Dr Sharon Johnston and HM The Queen visit Återskapa (Recreate) in Malmö – a creative reuse, design and education centre
14.15 Governor General Johnston and HM The King visit European Spallation Source in Lund

Thursday 23 February – Gothenburg
Morning:
10.40 Governor General Johnston, HM The King and Prince Carl Philip visit Lindholmen Science Park for talks about Gothenburg’s development and a panel discussion on sustainable shipping

Afternoon:
